Potential Future Internet Security Issues

The emerging Information Highways offer a huge potential for carrying public information services thanks to their pervasive and immediate accessibility. The Internet is currently seen as the most promising vehicle for the implementation of these new services. Most of the basic security problems inhibiting the safe use of the network are close to being solved as discussed in the previous issue of this journal [1]. The purpose of this paper is to show that further hard-to-solve security problems come from the current Cyberspace euphoria: people tend to believe that their conventional information infrastructures can be transposed one-to-one into the new networked infrastructures. In doing so, they neglect many subtleties with far reaching consequences for security and its administration. The last issue outlined herein, about the security of naming and routing, may materialize if conventional political disputes erupt also in Cyberspace and the technology is not
